How Auctions Work

New to auctions? Whether you are buying or selling, we’ll guide you through each step. Some of our auctions are online only; others also offer in-person bidding. Check each auction page for its dates, viewing and collection arrangements.

Buying at Auctions

  1. Browse an auction and read the lot descriptions and photographs.
  2. Register to bid
  3. Ask questions and attend a viewing if one is offered.
  4. Place a bid online or in person, depending on the sale.
  5. If you win, receive your invoice and pay.
  6. Arrange collection by the deadline shown for that auction.

Selling at Auction

  1. Send us photos and details of your items.
  2. Discuss lots, commission and any reserve with us.
  3. Drop off accepted items by appointment or arrange an agreed collection.
  4. We photograph, catalogue and advertise the lots.
  5. The auction takes place and we tell you the results.
  6. Once the buyer has paid, we provide a seller statement and arrange your payment under the agreed terms.

Auction terms made simple

  • Lot: One item or a group of items sold together.
  • Bid: An offer to buy a lot at a stated price.
  • Hammer price: The final accepted bid.
  • Reserve: A minimum selling price agreed in advance, where one applies.
